The person who invented the motor vehicle also invented the traffic jam. This is a one-sentence anecdote of how unintended consequences haunt the history of human ingenuity of finding symptomatic solutions to perceived problems. What can we do to avoid at least some of the foreseeably negative consequences of our idea, product, or business?
It has become a cliché to point out that in order to face our current societal challenges, we need to find new approaches to problem solving. One of the often proposed approaches is thinking and acting in systems. It is not immediately obvious, however, how to find a systemic angle within one’s chosen field of work.
