Systems Sensing and Awareness

The societal challenges that we are facing today are complex and can feel overwhelming at times. Each situation is interrelated with many other aspects and unique, therefore requires us to approach it with a sense of care, presence and courage.

When engaging in systemic change work, a whole new set of leadership qualities and skills is required, that will enable us to shift our focus from an ego- to an ecosystem-perspective leading to more meaningful, coherent and longer-term viable action. How do we sense what is happening in a system? How do we know when it’s the right time for an intervention of systemic relevance, and what shape this intervention may need to have? Who are the right people to bring together, and how do we track what is unfolding, receive its hidden messages and make meaning together?

“In fact, in this day and age, when problems are increasingly complex, and there simply are not simple answers, and there is no simple cause and effect any longer, I cannot imagine how stressful it is to be the leader and to pretend that you have the answer. So, what I see in life-affirming leaders is that they are willing to say to people “I do not know the answer, but together we will figure it out.”” - Margaret Wheatley
